2. Q
Author:
Definition:
The symbol used by hydrologists to represent flow. It may also mean the design flow for a particular project. With a subscript number, Q refers to a flow recurrence interval; Q10 is the flow that occurs, on the average, only once in 10 years (also known as the 10% frequency, or recurrence, event), Q25 is the flow which occurs only every 25 years (4% event), and Q100 occurs once in 100 years (1% event). The recurrence interval is a statistical average, not a fixed number of years. Q10, Q25, and Q100 are common design standards for flood control projects.
3. Q banding
Author: Guo Li
Definition:
Q banding is a method of identifying chromosomes in a karyotype that have abnormalities by staining the chromosomes with quinacrine dye. When the chromosomes are viewed with a fluorescent microscope after this treatment, unique patterns of fluorescent bands are seen with each chromosome.
4. Q fever
Definition:
A disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burneti which mainly afflicts sheep and cattle but can be transmitted to humans who have contact with infected animals. Symptoms resemble those of influenza and include fever, headache and lung inflammation.
5. Q wave
Author: Guo Li
Definition:
A Q wave is a negative deflection at the onset of a QRS complex in an electrocardiogram. An abnormal Q wave is one that spans 0.04 seconds or more in duration and reaches greater than 25% of the amplitude of the adjacent R wave.
6. Qß phage
Definition:
A single-stranded RNA phage that specifically infects enterobacteria containing the F plasmid. It is widely used to study RNA phage and bacterial cell function.

8. quadriceps
Author: Guo Li
Definition:
Quadriceps is the term usually used when referring to the quadriceps femoris muscles, which are the extensor muscles of the leg covering the front and sides of the femur. It consists of four muscles: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, medialis, and intermedius.

17. quantum speciation (saltational speciation)
Definition:
The rapid evolution of a new species from a small population that is partially or totally isolated from the parent population; the rapid speciation occurs due to genetic drift and founder effect and usually involves a few mutations that have a big impact on the organisms' observable physical traits.
